Easter Blessings…
Easter will soon be upon us and the Bakery is buzzing like little bees creating the honey to share with so many Rosie fans. City Easter egg hunts have begun and stores are overflowing with baskets, chocolates and fillers for all ages. Amidst it all, our Midwest weather continues to be volatile as spring weather battles with old man winter. As a small business owner, I observe it all with anticipation of our little bakery adding something to the family table or someone’s Easter basket. I have many fond memories of Easter baskets as a child. My sister back then worked for Brack’s Candy Company and I would get baskets almost as big as I was filled with all sorts of amazing things.
This exciting holiday ritual has a rich history that dates back centuries ago. In short, Eostre, the pagan fertility goddess of humans and crops, was depicted cradling a woven basket in the crook of her arm thus the beginning of the Easter basket tradition. Easter basket stuffers were all about symbolism. From medieval times, the hopping hare was a symbol of fertility. The exchanging of baskets descended from early medieval Catholics. To celebrate the end of Lent, they would bring baskets of delicious goods to church in order to be blessed by a priest.
Today, some of these same rituals are celebrated in accordance with each family’s tradition making it all the more special for every family. Whichever way you decide to fill your baskets this year, we at Rosie’s thank you from the bottom of our hearts for including some of our gluten and dairy free treats in your family tradition and wish you and your family many Easter blessings.
God Bless
