Getting on Board
A beautiful way to start a dinner party or to serve by itself at a gathering of friends, is the very popular charcuterie board. Although my first impression upon seeing one was quite intimidating, I have grown to love them. There is no right or wrong and a board can be as complex or as simple as you make it. These boards are not a new thing and have been around for hundreds of years. The word charcuterie derives from French origins in the 15th century. During this time, all aspects of meat were used, so as not to be wasteful, and was cured for preservation. Today, charcuterie boards have become very popular with the millennial generation. They enjoy experiencing a variety of flavors thanks to all the different combinations that can be on a board at one time.
I, personally, started off my charcuterie adventure while hosting a family gathering. I didn’t do any special shopping. I just went to the pantry and refrigerator and started pulling things out. I used a marble lazy susan I had on the counter and started positioning sliced swiss and cheddar cheese, assorted crackers, nuts and some kalamata olives. I do have to admit, the positioning of your items is what makes your board unique and inviting. It truly is an art form that should be fun.
While traditional charcuterie boards are made with meats and cheeses, it’s now common to include all types of bread, fruit, nuts, vegetables, spreads, sauces, herbs and even sweets.
Yes, you heard me – even sweets! Being a baker and owning my own bakery does give me one up. However, you don’t have to bake in order to create a board. Making your GF purchases ahead of time, refrigerating or freezing until the day of, is what counts. On the day of your event, simply cut and arrange your favorites on a board of your choice and you will be the hit of your party! Include frostings, sprinkles, honey, jellies, fresh fruit, or whipped cream! Remember, there is no right or wrong and you will get better at it with more practice! Don’t wait for a party to make one, surprise your spouse, children or friends. It’s a truly special bond and memory maker for all!
